Underground railroad
Network of secret routes and safe house established in U.S. during early 19th century used for slaves ti escape to freedom.
Scalawags
Name given to southerners who supported the republicans and reconstruction of the south.
Black Codes
Laws passed in the south just afater the civil war aimed at controlling freedmen and enabling plantation owners to exploit African American workers.
14th Amendment
All people born or naturalized in the U.S. are citizens.
