What was the American dream?
The idea that anyone from any background could achieve a good life and have lots of money and they worked hard.
Why was there an economic boom?
Laissez Faire
Assembly line-lots of goods production.
Credit-paying for things after they’d bought them.
Knowledge-fridges, radios, cars.
Position of usa after ww1-made lots of money from ww1.
Advertising-lots of factories for advertising after ww1.
New consumer goods-cars,telephones,tobacco,fridges,fashion

What was the prohibition?
The buying, manufacture, and selling of alcohol was banned from 1920-1933.
Why was prohibition introduced?
Temperance movement believed there were too many bars in America.
Lots of anti-german feelings and lots of bars were being rum by Germans.
Lots of children were dying because of drunk parents smothering them. Lots of people spending all the money on alcohol.
Why did the prohibition fail?
Very hard to police, many police were bribed.
The rise of organised crime. Gangsters made lost of money sneaking alcohol into speakeasies.
Most people still bought alcohol in speakeasies.
Who did not benefit from the boom?
Unskilled labourers.
Rural banks.
Farming.
Coal miners.
Unemployment.
Why did unskilled labourers not benefit from the boom?
Many relied on farm work.
As farms closed down they were forced to move to nearby cities.
There was very little demand for unskilled labourers, and it led to many being unemployed. This was particularly badly felt by black Americans.
Why did rural banks not benefit from the boom?
They relied on farmers. As many farms were disappearing in the 1920s, many rural banks went bust.
Why did farming not benefit from the boom?
Less European exporta due to tariffs lead to less demand for agriculture. Population of USA falling so less mouths to feed.
Improved machinery meant that farmers were overproducing and not getting good value for their products.
Why did coal miners not benefit from the boom?
Demand for coal decreased because of new things like oil and electricity.
They were payed very poorly.
Who were flappers?
Flappers were women who wore short, bobbed hair, short skirts, and were known for drinking and smoking.
How did women’s life change in 1920s America?
Got the right to vote in 1920.
Went to high school and college more than ever before. They had lots more freedom. Simple fashions could be bought in any store.
