The Alliance system
It was divided into 2. The Triple Alliance of 1882 ans the Triple Entente 1907.
Triple Alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy
The Triple Entente consisted of France, Britain and Russia
Triple Entente:
Franco- Russian Alliance = 1894
Entente cordiale, Britain and France = 1914
Anglo-Russian alliance = 1907
Second Moroccan crisis
It was 1911-1912
The Moroccan sultan appealed to the French for help to crush a rebellion. The kaiser opposed the French actions and decided to use the Rebellion to take over Morocco. He sent a German gunboat called the ’panther’ to Agadir
The Somme
The first day of the battle, July 1st 1916, was seen as the bloodiest. A total of 60,00 British died on the first day alone. The battle lasted 141 days total number of British casualties is 419,654. It was seen as ground offensive but is was also faught from the air too. There were 800 aircraft lost and 252 aircrew killed.
The Schlieffen plan
It was made by Alfred Von Schlieffen. The aim was for the Germans to get France and concor it. Germany planned to go through Belgium and reach France before Russia mobilized their army. But this did not go to plan in many ways. Belgium flooded their own country to slow the Germans down and Russia managed to mobilize their army a lot quicker than expected.
Anglo- German naval race
It started in 1906 when Britain started to build dreadnoughts. They had 1 at this time. Germany in 1908 then began to their own and managed to build more in that year. They built 4 and Britain built 2. In the end 1914 Britain had 29 and Germany had 17. This caused a lot of tension between the two countries.
Balkan wars
It consisted of two conflicts that took place in the Balkan Peninsula. The first war was between Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and the Ottoman Empire. The second Balkan began when Serbia, Greece and Romania quarreled with Bulgaria over the devision of their joint conquests in Macedonia. On July 1st 1913 Serbia and Greece formed an alliance against Bulgaria and the war began on the night of June 29th 1913
