History of the Atom Flashcards
What is the Dalton model of the atom?
Dalton thought that atoms had everything in it so that there was nothing to be changed.
What is the plum pudding model?
The plum pudding model is an atom with a positively charged area with negatively charged electrons spread around evenly.
Who discovered the plum pudding model?
J.J. Thomson.
What the name of the experiment conducted by Ernest Rutherford?
The experiment was called the gold foil.
What were the 2 properties of the atom found by Ernest Rutherford? How were they discovered?
1) Empty space within the atom - shooting the alpha particles (2 protons and 2 electrons) at the gold foil and most of them passed through the atom
2) The alpha particles which were getting shot at the centre of the atom were deflected back. Which means that there was a positive and a positive.
What is an alpha particle? What is its charge?
The charge of an alpha particle is 2 protons and 2 electrons.
What did Neils Bohr discover about the structure of the atom?
Electrons exist in shells and orbit the nucleus at specific distances.
