Lunacy comes from a theory by this Swiss physician who attributed odd behavior to the misalignment of the moon and stars.

Benjamin Rush (1745-1813)
Believed in more humane treatment of psychiatry patients. Should be approached with compassion. Although his former asylum patient, Jean-Baptiste Pussin, should get credit for unshackling the patients. However, his compassion was reserved for the wealthy while the poor languished in horrible oppression.

Crusader for better conditions in the US asylums. She was a school teacher and taught Sunday school in the asylums.
Dorothy Dix (1802-1887)
Considered the last great classical age physician; beginning with his death, the so called dark ages of medicine and treatment began.
Galen (AD 130-200)
