What is Trepanning?
A historical medical and mystical practice that involved drilling a small piece of bone from the skull. This practice was performed to alleviate pressure or swelling from the skull resulting from head trauma
It was also performed to remove evil spirits from the head. This was due to the belief that abnormal behaviour indicated the presence of evil spirits in the head.
What water treatments would they use?
Water boarding

what was the act of “dislodging of the stone”?
some doctors said that people had abnormal behaviour due to a stone in their head. They would charge people and then pretend to pull a stone from their head.
Why would they separate people from society?
They would do this to protect society from perceived danger in these individuals. They were viewed as a threat to social order. They would send these individuals to institutions located in the countryside to safeguard the community from potential harm.
They claimed to also provide treatment and care for individuals, however, they become overcrowded and offered inadequate care.
What was the eugenics movement in Canada?
IN the 1920s, there was a movement that advocated for the seperation and sterilization deemed feebleminded or genetically inferior.
What was the straight jacket used for?
After the French Revolution they created the straight jacket. They would restrict movement to protect yourself and the individual. This placed emphasis on the individual, and helping those who aren’t behaving rationally
What is the spread eagle method?
You pour water on a person to bring them back to sanity.
What is the whirling chair?
spinning a person to help them regain sanity.
What is a lobotomy?
Removing a part of the brain.
