Q

Who was the Earl of Durham?

A

The Earl of Durham, aka John Lambton, was a British lord. He was sent to Canada to ask “what is the problem?” He found that the French wanted equal treatment and the British wanted freedom. When Lord Durham returned, he wrote the Report on the Affairs of British North America. In this, he calls for reuniting Upper Canada and Lower Canada along with other provinces like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. He also suggests that the people should self govern.
