The British North American Act created the dominion of Canada. While still part of Britain, Canada was still effectively united and independent.

The War of 1812 was caused when the US thought that Britain should move their troops away from US borders. For the first time, the Canadians united to protect Canada Hard times fell n the Canadian people, food shortage and disease.

Gold was discovered in the Klondike area. 80,000 people went to become rich. Many foreign immigrants settled in Canada for that reason.
