Q

How did Operation Sook Ching help the Japanese control SG?

A

Operation Sook Ching was aimed to identify and eliminate anti-Japanese elements among the local population. ( 1) The Kempeitai, in charge of this operation, targeted the Chinese population (2) as they were viewed as a potential threat to their rule. This was as when the Japanese invaded China in 1937, they faced strong resistance from the Chinese, including the Chinese communities living outside of China. (3) The Chinese communities called a boycott for Japanese goods, contributed funds to China’s efforts against Japan. Some also returned to China to join in the fight against the Japanese.(4) Hence, the Japanese posted notices requiring all Chinese men aged 18 to 50 to assemble at mass screening centres to be examined by the Japanese. (5) This was a brutal purge of members of the Chinese community who were suspected of being anti-Japanese.(6)
