what did the roman catholic church believe caused disease
they believed that God caused disease in order to cleanse the soul
What was astrology
physicians would use star charts, look at when a person was born and when they fell sick to identify what was wrong. the church disagreed with this
What was the theory of the four humors
the four humors were blood, black bile, phlegm and choler and was originally created by Hippocrates. sickness was linked to the imbalance of the four humors. Galen further developed this idea.
Why did the church have so much power at the time
many people did go to school so they got their teachings from the church. lots of people were also scared to go against them because they wanted to make it into heaven in the afterlife. the church also supported Galen which meant that Galen’s ideas would be final
what were urine chats and what were they used for
physicians would use the smell, taste, consistency and colour of a persons urine to determine their diagnosis. they had charts for different colours. and this also linked with the four humors

who were physicians
medieval doctors, all men, study for seven years. they would use astrology, four humors and urine charts to diagnose patients. they did not preform any surgery’s and were expensive
who were apothecaries
they mixed herbal remedies and did not have any training. They were also cheaper that physicians. they also prescribed poison and amulets
who were barber surgeons
they have a lot of experience and performed small surgeries (pulling teeth and bleeding) surgeries had a low success rate and was very painful.

they were run by monks and nuns who had no medical training. “care not cure” they didn’t take in infected patients. they mostly took care of the elderly and poor

pray, fast, pilgrimage, whipping yourself, avoid bathing because it opens your pours to corrupt air, carry herbs and flowers, do joyful things

banding preaching to stop large crowds, Quarantine, stop cleaning the streets ( bad smells would drive of miasma). They didn’t have a lot of power so not every one listened to the rules
