What was the tank?
It was a machine invented in 1915 by a British farmer. It could only move at 6km an hour and would often break down.
What were machine guns?
They were guns that required 2 men to operate. They could fire 600 bullets a minute.
What was poison gas?
It was a method used to wipe out troops. It suffocated the lungs and was first used by the Germans.
What was heavy artillery?
It was used to bombard enemy trenches before and during attacks. It made it harder to go through no-man’s-land.
What were planes used for?
Planes were used for gathering valuable information about the enemy and their trench layouts. It was later when they were fitted with machine guns.
What would a soldier do?
They would:
Be on guard duty
collect food and water,ammunition, first aid etc
repair the trenches
How long would soldiers spend in each trench line?
1 week in the front line, 4 in the support line and 8 in the reserve line.
What diseases could you get from the trenches?
tuberculosis, pneumonia,dysentery and trench foot
What food would soldiers eat?
tinned beef with some bread, with bacon,cheese and jam as treats
