Q

T.K. Cureton

A

commonly referred as the “father of physical fitness” taught at the UIUC from 1941 to 1969

Q

Dave Costill

A

Director of the Human Performance Laboratory.

Established in 1966, a variety of research topics include nutrition, muscle metabolism, elite athletes, and aging space flight.

For each research project, a scientific and a lay paper were written

Q

August Krogh

A
  • His research linked exercise physiology with nutrition and metabolism
  • Krogh Cycle Ergometer, improved current approach that permitted determination of concentration of these gases in expired air to a precision of 0.001%
  • 1874-1949 worked in bohr’s lab in the late 1890’s, considered by most as the “father of exercise physiology”- seven little devils- papers that refuted bohr’s theory of oxygen transport from the lungs to the blood. Published in 1910 on the mechanisms of gas exchange, diet and oxygen deficit. Built and adapted instrumentation for physiological measurements

Q

Who were the main personalities involved with the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory (HFL) laboratory and its development?

A
  • L.J. Henderson (1878-1942)- original concept was to study industrial workers, secured space in morgan hall of the business school, began operations with 525,000
  • D.B. Dill- Ph.D. with Carl Alsberg at Stanford, post fatigue lab: IU and bolder, NV. 53 s quarter mile, 40-40-40 club

Q

Be able to discuss the impact of the Harvard Fatigue Lab on the development of exercise physiology.

A

Highly influenced by WWII, research for the army, focused on fatigue.

The original concept was to study industrial workers

Numerous scientists worked at the HFL, in environmental research

This was the first laboratory for the comprehensive study of man.
