The Catholic Church was supremely powerful in society and restricted what ideas to with medicine were acceptable.
They only allowed The Four Humours.
In Renaissance times…
The power of the Catholic Church was challenged.
Printed books meant the Catholic Church no longer had control over what ideas could be printed and reproduced.

In Medieval times
Herbs that people used included Therica (a mix of 70) and ingredients like honey oil, mallow and camomile.
In Renaissance times
Herbs were more exotic and came from overseas.
Coffee was used as a treatment for depression and constipation.

Renaissance physicians took an interest in the size, shape and colour of particular herbs when trying to work out the best remedies.

Apothecaries were people who mixed herbal remedies and had good knowledge of which plants had healing powers thanks to a good study of the materia medica.
In Renaissance times
Apothecaries were some of the first people to experiment with chemicals / arsenic compounds.

Used a lot by the rich
In Medieval times people would see hospital as a chance to escape chaotic towns.
In Renaissance times people would be visited by “health maidens” bringing them remedies.
The very richest in Industrial times had all their care provided for them in their homes.

Became more common after 1536.
After the theory of contagious diseases was written down, these became places where people with specific diseases like leprosy, plague and pox would go.
Apothecaries and physicians would have contracts with Pest Houses.

Hospitals became places you would get treated, not simply rest in.
Physicians/Doctors would visit everyday.
Charity hospitals existed for the “deserving poor”.
Rich preferred care at home.

It was
Healthcare paid for through taxes.
It mattered
Organised hospitals.
The poor no longer relied on charity.
Government funding meant hospitals could access new high-tech science and tech.
Factors helping the fight against Lung Cancer
Scanners CT Scans and PET CT Scans to analyse cells. Dyes To stain potentially cancerous cells. Transplants To allow patients access to healthy lungs. Government 1965: banned advertising on TV.
2007: Smoking Ban in public places.
