Warwick’s greed and ambition main points
•warwick dominated govt after northampton became accustomed to governing through his own kinsmen and retainers
•wanted promotion to earldom - denied
•marriage between Isabel Neville and George duke of Clarence denied - motivation: warwick’s grandchildren on throne
•need to service warwick’s greed shown through the rewarding of the neville’s: George neville as chancellor (146) and archbishop of york (1465) and John Neville as lord montagu (1464) and Earl of northumberland (replacing percies)
•foreign policy: Warwick’s allience with Louis XI and marriage allience with bona of savoy - undermined by Ed
Edwards actions and policies main points
•promotion of the woodvilles: Richard Woodville to an earldom in 1466, marriage of catherine to Henry Stafford in 1465 and mary to william herbert - drying up of the marriage market was of immense personal and dynamic concern to Warwick due to his daughters
• promotion of Richard Woodville to treasurer of england replaced lord mountjoy and removal of george neville from chancellor in 1467, resumption of land from george and warwick and the promotion of men who challenged the authority of the Nevilles - felt like a personal attack
evaluation:
•no woodville held great office before 1470 (exception of Richard Woodville)
•Edwards continued to primarily look to Hastings, Herbert and above all Warwick
•Edward continued to reward warwick and sign off estates to him right up until the day he rebelled
Edwards marriage main points
•Edward had many natural assets and so had the opportunity to marry well ( form a foreign alliance ) however he wasted it by marrying Elizabeth ( May 1464)
• humiliated Warwick because marriage was secret and warwick arranged marriage between Edward and Bona and Savoy - humiliated warwick and offended louis XI who had promised Warwick Holland and Zealand if he could secure and alliance between England and France
• on its own not very convincing but when combined with edwards actions and policies it becomes detrimental to the breach between Edward IV and Warwick due to the promotion of the woodvilles that followed
• If Edward didn’t promote the woodvilles so excessively then the marriage itself wouldn’t have had any major impact on their relationship - unconvincing argument
• marriage was in 1464 and Warwick didn’t rebel until 1469
