What went wrong in the Somme?
Artillery and shells
- Artillery shells: The artillery shells were not accurate and some didn’t explode. Also the barbed wire wasn’t destroyed, as had been intended, so when the British went over the top they got caught in barbed wire and mowed down by German machine gun posts

- No man’s land was filled with water in craters that made movement difficult and many soldiers drowned as they fell in a crater with a heavy uniform and kit

German Bunkers
- The German bunkers were concrete, strong and deep so the shells didn’t kill them. They were much more ready to defend themselves when the big push came

The Generals
- The generals were ‘old school’ and not prepared for new warefare and new weapons / technology

- The generals didn’t change tactics when it should have been clear that they were not working

Communication and command
- Poor communication and line of command so that when they went over the top and saw German machine gin posts intact the soldiers didn’t have the authority to order new artillery attacks at the german post

British soldiers
British Soldiers were inexperienced and so were ineffective at fighting.
