  1. 1791: importation of vine cuttings from Cape of Good Hope to Sydney
  2. 1820-40: commercial viticulture established in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria and finally South Australia. All from Vitis vinifera plantings (i.e. no native vines) brought from Europe by immigrants
  3. 1870-1930: South Australia, thanks to the irrigation along the Murray River, booming for fortified & Phylloxera in other regions overtakes Victoria and New South Wales to make 3⁄4 of the country’s wine production.
  4. Exports of fortified wines and alcoholic reds to the UK & Europe.
  5. 1950s: introduction of stainless steel cold fermentation (whites); red wine demand booming
  6. 1970s: introduction of wine cask, rise of boutique wineries, white demand booming
  7. Since mid-1980s: export boom & vineyard overhaul w rapid rise of premium international varieties e.g.
  8. Chardonnay, Merlot, etc. at the expense or non-premium & multipurpose varieties e.g. Trebbiano.
