- 1791: importation of vine cuttings from Cape of Good Hope to Sydney
- 1820-40: commercial viticulture established in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria and finally South Australia. All from Vitis vinifera plantings (i.e. no native vines) brought from Europe by immigrants
- 1870-1930: South Australia, thanks to the irrigation along the Murray River, booming for fortified & Phylloxera in other regions overtakes Victoria and New South Wales to make 3⁄4 of the country’s wine production.
- Exports of fortified wines and alcoholic reds to the UK & Europe.
- 1950s: introduction of stainless steel cold fermentation (whites); red wine demand booming
- 1970s: introduction of wine cask, rise of boutique wineries, white demand booming
- Since mid-1980s: export boom & vineyard overhaul w rapid rise of premium international varieties e.g.
- Chardonnay, Merlot, etc. at the expense or non-premium & multipurpose varieties e.g. Trebbiano.
