What are the reasons why the American colonist won the War of Independence? Name at least 2.

  1. General George Washington was an excellent military leader. For example, he kept his army together despite the many setbacks they faced.
  2. The British made many mistakes. For example, General Burgoune’s army was ill-equipped to fight the colonists on his march south from Canada. This led to his defeat at Saratoga.
  3. The American colonist used guerilla tactics that were more suited to the terrain. For example, they used sharp-shooters and ambushes to inflict heavy casualties on the British.
  4. The French intervened in the war on the side of the American colonists. The French navy stopped British from resupplying their army. This led to the American victory at Yorktown.
  5. The Americans used inoculation to stop the spread of the deadly disease, smallpox. This led to less deaths amongst their army.
  6. Baron von Steuben, a Prussian military officer, helped to organize and train the American army at their winter camp at Valley forge. He helps to transform them into a well-trained, and disciplined army.

  1. Britain had large amounts of iron-ore that was used to make machinery and railways.
  2. Britain had large amounts of coal was used af fuel for iron furnaces and for steam engines.
  3. New sources of power such as water and steam were used to power machines more efficiently.
  4. The population was growing quickly. This ment there were more customers to buy goods and more workers for factories.
  5. Changes in farming meant that more food could be grown to feed the growing population.
  6. Trade became much more free with the decline of feudalism.
  7. Ambitious businessmen were able to use their money in new inventions and factories.
  8. Britain was expanding her transport. Her colonies became an important source of raw materials and provided new transportation for manufactured goods.
