Archaeologist
A person who studies human history through the excavation/ digging of sites and the analysis of artefacts and other physical remains
Primary source
Existed or were written or made during the time being studied. They have a direct link to the event, period or person being studied.
Secondary source
Things that have been created after the time being studied. Interprets and analyses primary sources. One or more steps removed from the event.
Give some examples of sources that historians use to investigate the past
Fossils, bones, books, ruins, etc.
Why is it important for historians to start an investigation with a hypothesis?
It helps to guide their investigation.
When doing a source analysis, you need to consider the following three things:
Origin: where and when it was made
Message: what point it is communicating
Purpose: Why it was made

Dates and locations, and the person or group who made it.
When determining the message of a source, you should look for…
The main idea or point. A source’s message refers to the point the author is trying to communicate about an idea or event. *Provide a quote or reference to support the message.
When determining the purpose of a source, you should look for…
The reason or reasons the source was created. E.g. Was it:
To inform people of important ideas (low bias)
To persuade people to agree with the author (high bias)
To entertain people
