In 1916 the government introduced a law called conscription. This law required people to join the army if their name was selected. They introduced it because they were having a shortage on volunteers.

Lord kitchener wanted the ulster volunteers to join his army because he knew that they were good fighters
For what reasons would the Nationalists fight?
The nationalists would fight because they thought they should help Belgium as it was a small, mainly catholic country like ireland. They also thought that if they went and helped britain win the war they would bring in home rule
