Erosion Flashcards
What is geology?
The study of rocks
What is a geologist
A geologist is a scientist who studies the solid and liquid matter that makes up the earth.
What is the definition of erosion
The wearing away of rock and its removal by streams, ice, waves and wind.
Explain Wind erosion
Wind picks up tiny particles of sand and thows them against anything that is in the way
Name the 3 types of Weathering
Physical, Chemical and biological
What are the 2 types of physical weathering?
Freeze-thaw and onionskin
How is a sedimentery rock formed?
Weathering- rock is broken down
Erosion- Material is eroded and removed by an agent of erosion
Depositition - Material is eventually dropped at the bottom of lake/river
Compaction - Layers build up on each other putting pressure on bottom layers
Cementation - Dissolved minerals in rock stick rock together.
What is biological weathering
The break down of rocks by burrowing animals or tree roots.
Explain how freeze-thaw works
Water enters crack in rock
Water freezes widening crack
Ice melts causing water to go deeper into crack
Process repeats until rock is broken
What are the two types of igneous rocks
Extrusive and intrusive
True or false Extrusive rocks cool quickly
True
Name 2 types of sedimentry rocks
Sandstone and limestone
How does rainwater disolve or weaken rocks?
All rainwater has a weak acid that damages rocks
Where does onion skin weathering occur?
It usually found in hot deserts
How are Extrusive igneous rocks formed?
When an eruption occurs magma can be forced through the surface becoming lava. it cools very quickly. Small crystals r formed
