Historical figures Flashcards
Paul de Kruif
Author of “Microbe Hunters” (1926).
Anton van Leeuwenhoek
Credited in “Microbe Hunters” as the inventor of the first microscope. Also coined the term “animalcules” based on the organisms he saw swimming in pond/rainwater.
Robert Hooke
Probably the actual inventor of the first microscope. Coined the term “Cells” from his observations of cork. Wrote the book Micrographia.
Joseph Lister
The father of the aseptic technique. Listerine and Listeria both named after him.
Lazzaro Spallanzani
Added on to the nutrient broth experiment, disproving spontaneous generation.Boiled flasks immediately sealing half Naysayers- air is needed for spontaneous generation.
Louis Pasteur
Building off of the works of Spallanzani, Pasteur invented the swan neck flask to disprove spontaneous generation.. Research included rabies, fowl cholera, and anthrax - made vaccines for all 3
Charles Chamberland
An assistant working under Pasteur, responsible for the Pasteur/Chamberland filter. Inoculation of chickens with fowl cholera (dead/dying microorganisms)–> Chickens developed an
immunity.
Emile Roux
Theorized the organism, now known as corynebacterium diphtheria, in causing the diphtheria disease
Alfred Nobel
Namesake of the Nobel prize; Invented dynamite
Emil von Behring*
German working with diphtheria, developed an “antiserum” for the disease. Nobel prize 1901 “first recipient”
Robert Koch*
German physician that worked with TB- most well known for “Koch’s Postulates”.received the Nobel prize for finding the causative agent of TB. Found/cultured anthrax and human cholera.First used of solid media to grow microorganisms. Petri worked for Robert Koch
Dmitri Ivanovsky
Worked with Tobacco Mosaic “disease” (later known as a virus)
Joe Jackson Lister
Combined lenses making the achromatic lens reducing refraction
Theobold Smith
American epidemiologist discovered the causative agent for Texas Cattle fever “Babesia” a protozoan parasite. Also noticed arthropods being vectors for parasites (ticks in this case). His boss David Salmon took credit for Salmonella.
Ronald Ross*
Found malaria in the gut of mosquitos. Avian malaria not human malaria- controlling mosquitos might help control malaria. 1902 Nobel prize
Charles Laveran*
Identified the malaria parasite and first one to say protozoan could cause disease. Suspected mosquitos can transmit the disease. Discovered Trypanosomes(African Sleeping Sickness)1907 Nobel prize
Giovanni Battista Grassi
Correctly described human malaria and the lifecycle of the malaria, human roundworm, tapeworm, and falaria worms.
David Bruce
Identified the tsetse fly as being the vector for African Sleeping Sickness. T. Brucei
Walter Reed
Worked on yellow fever in Cuba. Carlos Finlay suspected with the help of Walter Reed that a mosquito would transmit yellow fever. Flavivirus (flavi meaning yellow)
Eli Metchnikoff*
Worked on starfish larvae. Coined the term phagocytosis. . Shared the Nobel prize with Ehrlich
Paul Ehrlich
Discovered stains for granulocytes, discovered mast cells, developed treatment for syphilus (arsenic), was the basis of Gram stain
Edward Jenner
Father of immunology
Advanced age old practice of “variolation” by using cowpox to prevent smallpox infections - Pasteur coined term vaccine based on his work
Carolus Lineaus
Developed Binomial Nomenclature
