histone modifications Flashcards
what is genomic imprinting?
only one working copy of a gene is inherited and the other copy is epigenetically silenced
how do diseases involving genomic imprinted genes occur?
segment containing the gene is deleted + the other copy is silenced -> important genes not expressed -> no active copies of the gene
what is dosage compensation?
process that balances expression of sex-linked genes to offset the difference in sex-chromosome number
what is X-chromosome inactivation?
one of the two x chromosomes is randomly and permanently inactivated in cells other than egg cells
ensures only one functional copy of x chr, like in males
what is ChIP-seq?
chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing:
some DNAs have protein bound to it. specific antibodies bind to the protein and is immunoprecipitated. bound DNA is coprecipitated, purified and sequenced
identifies genome-wide DNA binding sites for transcription factors and other proteins
