Histology of Esophagus and Stomach Flashcards
Function of the oral cavity?
- mechanical breakdown 2. formation of bolus
Function of the oesophagus?
conduit from mouth to stomach
Function of stomach?
- digestion 2. temporary storage
Function of intestine?
- digestion 2. absorption
Function of the colon?
- temporary storage 2. absorption
Describe the mucosa of the esophagus?
very folded
Describe the epithelium of the mucosa?
stratified squamous non-keratinized
Describe the lamina propria of the mucosa of the esophagus?
nodular lymphatic tissue with oesophageal cardiac glands
Describe the muscalaris mucosa of the esophagus?
thick single layer of smooth miuscle
Describe the submucosa of the esophagus?
- dense irregular connective tissue
- deep oesophageal mucous glands
- diffuse and nodular lymphatic tissue
Describe the muscularis externa?
- proximal 1/3 - skeletal 2. middle 1/3 - skeletal + smooth 3. distal 1/3 - smooth
Describe the adventitia?
outermost layer of connective tissue attached to nearby structures that keeps esophagus in a fixed position
What is the serosa?
last 1-2 cm of esophagus within the abdominal cavity - covered by simple squamous epithelium or mesothelium
What is Barettes esophagus?
Condition where stratified squamous epithelium of distal part changes to simple columnar epithelium
Cause of Barettes esophagus?
extensive gastroesophageal reflux
Consequences of Barettes esophagus?
high risk of developing adenocarcinomas
Describe the mucosa of the stomach?
- rugae and mamillated areas
- gastric pits
- glands
Function of gastric rugae?
to permit stomach distention
Describe the epithelium of the mucosa of the stomach?
have surface mucous cells
Describe the lamina propria of the mucosa?
- areas around gastric pits and glands 2. smooth muscle cells
Describe the muscalaris mucosa?
is thin
What are the glands of the gastric mucosa?
- cardiac glands 2. pyloric glands 3. fundic glands
Describe cardiac glands?
- simple tubular glands that are tortuous and occasionally branched 2. secrete mucous
Describe pyloric glands?
- highly branched, coiled tubular glands 2. secrete mucous
