Histology Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the 4 main types of tissue?
Epithelium
connective tissue
nervous
muscular
What are the main types of epithelium?
Simple
pseudostradified columnar
stratified
three types of simple epithelium?
squamous - egg
cuboidal
columnar
type of stratified epithelium?
squamous
What are the two odd epitheliums?
- pseudostratified ciliated columnar
- transitional
Where is simple squamous found?
- covers external surfaces of organs
- digestive
- lungs
- heart.
Simple cuboidal?
lines small excretory ducts
proximal convoluted tubule
What is the feature of the apical surface of simple cuboidal epithelium?
brush border of microvilli
simple columnar epithelium?
digestive organs
stomach
instesines
gallbladder
Where do the simple columnar epithilum have villi?
small intestine, they have villi and microvilli
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium?
- lines respiratory passages
- epididymis
- vas deferens
what is the special feature of pseudostratified epithelium?
Mobile cilia in respiratory passages
- stereocilia - non motile in epididymis/vas deferens
Stratified squamous? two types
keratinized
non keratinized
Where is non keratinized found?
moist cavities:
- mouth
- vagina
- anal canal
- pharynx
Are the surface cells of non keratinized stratified squamous alive?
yes
Keratinized epithelium is where? LIving?
lines external surfaces of the body, the surface cells are not living.
Stratified cuboidal and stratified columnar?
Line the LARGER excretory ducts:
- pancreas
- salivary glands
- sweat glands
Transitional epithelium?
urinary system:
- calyces
- pelvis
- ureter
- bladder
name of blood vessel epithelium?
endothelium - endo, on the inside lining
what type of cells would line the stomach?
simple columnar
Where could simple columnar epi with microvilli be found?
Small intestine - jejunum
if looking at skin slide, what would indicate keratinized?
The lack of nuclei in the outermost surface areas.
What is an un-natural element in a slide specimen called?
artifacts
What two categories are epithelium segregated into?
membrane
glandular
they can overlap
What Is meant by membrane epithelium?
lining or covering found in the body
What junctions tightly hold stratified squamous cells together?
desmosomes
What is keratinized?
epithelium with layer of dead skin cells on top
What type of cell is often found with PSCC?
Goblet cells
What do goblet cells do?
secrete mucus
