Histology Basics Flashcards
Define TEM and SEM.
Transmission Electron Microscopy
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Order of tissue size starting from cell.
Cell - Simple Tissues - Compound Tissue - Organ - System
Give an example of a compound tissue.
Cortex of kidney
Give a brief overview of tissue prep.
Fixation, dehydration and clearing, medium, thin slices, glass slides, staining
Why does Hematoxylin stain DNA?
Hematoxylin is a base so binds to acidic DNA.
Hematoxylin is Acidphillic.
Why does Eosin stain cytoplasmic constituents?
Eosin is an acid, it binds to components with a basic pH.
Eosin is Basophilic.
What colour does Masson’s trichrome stain nuclei, muscle and cytoplasm?
Nuclei - dark blue
Muscle and cytoplasm - red
What are the 3 embryonic layers of tissue?
Ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm
What are the 4 tissue types and where are they derived?
Epithelial tissue - ectoderm
Muscular tissue - mesoderm
Nervous tissue - ectoderm
Connective tissue - mesoderm
Role and location of epithelial tissue?
Cover surfaces, body lining, solid glands e.g salivary.
Role and location of muscular tissue?
Posses contractile properties, smooth, skeletal and cardiac
Role and location of nervous tissue?
Brain, spinal cord and nerves.
Role and location of connective tissue?
Cartilage and bone.
Name and define the types of epithelial tissue?
Simple - 1 cell layer
Stratified - 2 or more cell layers
What are the shapes of simple epithelial tissue?
Squamous (flat)
Cuboidal
Columnar
