Histology Flashcards
Define tissue
A group of similar cells and their extracellular matrix which carry out the same function
Define organ
A group of tissues with a specific function
What is the smooth ER involved in?
Lipid synthesis and drug detoxification
What are peroxisomes?
Peroxisomes are membrane bound organelles with free radical formation which detoxify toxins
What function do proteasomes carry out?
Proteasomes degrade cytosolic proteins by proteolysis
What is simple epithelium made up of?
A single layer of cells
What is stratified epithelium made of?
More than 1 layer of cells
What is a pseudo stratified epithelium?
An epithelium consisting of only a single layer of cells, but with cell nuclei positioned in a manner suggestive of stratified epithelium
What separates epithelium from connective tissue?
A basement membrane
What cells make up connective tissue?
Fibroblasts, adipocytes, macrophages and lymphoid cells (plasma cells, lymphocytes)
What are the 3 types of cartilage?
Hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, fibrocartilage
What’s hemopoiesis and where does it occur?
The production of blood cells and platelets in the bone marrow
What are oligodendroglia?
Glial cells involved in myelin production in the CNS, similar to astrocytes but with fewer protuberances.
What’s an astrocyte?
A star-shaped glial cell of the CNS
What does H&E stand for?
Haematoxylin and Eosin stain
What’s haematoxylin and what does it stain?
Haematoxylin is a purple-blue basic stain that stains acidic macromolecules such as DNA and RNA
What’s eosin and what does it stain?
Eosin is a pink acidic stain that stains basic macromolecules like cytoplasm of cells, and collagen
