Preserves the tissue

Why is the tissue dehydrated?
A
Enables tissue to be infiltrated with paraffin wax

What does H&E stand for?
A
Haematoxylin and Eosin

What does Haemotoxylin do?
A
Stains acidic or basophilic structures purple. (Stains the nucleus and organelles with RNA)

What does Eosin do?
A
Stains basic and acidophilic structures red/pink (Stains the cytoplasm, cell walls and extracellular fibres)

What does the Periodic Acid-Schiff stain?
A
Carbohydrates and glycoproteins are stained pink

What is ground section used for?
A
Used for hard tissues. Only way to see enamel structure

What does Gram Stain do?
A
It stains Gram+ bacteria blue and Gram- Bacteria red
