Histology Flashcards
What is a tissue
Grouping of multiple cells of the same type to preform a function
What are the four types of tissues found in the body
Epithelial, connective, muscle, and neural
What is the general function of each type of tissue
Epithelial thick - protects against microbes
Thin- exchange, absorption of materials, reduces friction
Connective - support and protection
Muscle - specialized to contract
Neural - conduction of electrical impulses
Define and describe the different types of intracellular connections common to epithelial tissue
Tight junctions - help to make the spaces between cells impermeable
Desmosomes - increase the resistance of the tissue to mechanical stress
Gap junction allow small substances to move from one cell to another
Describe the basic structure of an epithelial cell
Apical surface - surface of the tissue and top layer of cells
Lateral surface - surface between cells
Basal surface - surface underneath the cells
Basement membrane - bottom layer of tissue, underneath is connective tissue
What are the two general categories of epithelial tissue
Thick and thin
What is glandular epithelial tissue
Endocrine and exocrine glands
What is the difference between an endocrine gland and an exocrine gland
Endocrine - secrete directly into bloodstream
Exocrine - secrete a variety told different substances onto body surface via ducts
Provide examples of exocrine glands and their secretion
Goblet cells
Distinguish merocrine glands and holocrine glands
Merocrine - release products via exocytosis
- salivary glands
-sweat glands
Holocrine - secretory cells burst to release accumulated product
-oil-producing glands in the skin
-increased mitotic activity in basal layer of cells
Describe the general structure of connective tissue
Specialized cells and extra cellular matrix(protein fibers and ground substance)
What are the different types of cells in connective tissue
Fibroblasts - produce protein fibers and ground sub.
White blood cells - remove debris and pathogens
Adipocytes - store triglycerides
