Q

What is the general function of each type of tissue

A

Epithelial thick - protects against microbes
Thin- exchange, absorption of materials, reduces friction
Connective - support and protection
Muscle - specialized to contract
Neural - conduction of electrical impulses

Q

Define and describe the different types of intracellular connections common to epithelial tissue

A

Tight junctions - help to make the spaces between cells impermeable
Desmosomes - increase the resistance of the tissue to mechanical stress
Gap junction allow small substances to move from one cell to another

Q

Describe the basic structure of an epithelial cell

A

Apical surface - surface of the tissue and top layer of cells
Lateral surface - surface between cells
Basal surface - surface underneath the cells
Basement membrane - bottom layer of tissue, underneath is connective tissue

Q

What is the difference between an endocrine gland and an exocrine gland

A

Q

Distinguish merocrine glands and holocrine glands

A

Merocrine - release products via exocytosis
- salivary glands
-sweat glands
Holocrine - secretory cells burst to release accumulated product
-oil-producing glands in the skin
-increased mitotic activity in basal layer of cells
