Histology Flashcards
Basement Membrane
Separates the epithelium from underlying connective tissue
Epithelia classification
Simple - one layer
Stratified - two layers
Pseudostratified - one layer but not all cells reach apical region. Look for cilia as a giveaway
Squamous
Cuboidal
Columnar
Keratinized vs nonkeratinized (presence if nucleus)
Transitional - dome shaped, or flattened (depends if relaxed or stretched, example is bladder tissue)
Zonula occludens
Tight junction - in between cells on apical side, prevents things from leaving lumen and entering intercellular space
Fascia occludens
Ribbonlike area of fusion between transmembrane proteins on adjacent endothelial cells
Zonula adherens
Belt desmosome or intermediate junction
Desmosome
Adhesive site between epithelial cells
