histology Flashcards
apical surfaces (2)
cilia and microvilli
what is the function of epithelial tissue?
protect, secrete, absorb, exchange
where is epithelial tissue found?
skin, digestive system, urinary system, lung, reproductive system
where is simple squamous epithelium found? what is its function?
lining of blood vessels. filtration and gas exchange
where is simple cuboidal epithelium found? what is its function?
kidney tubules, ducts of glands. transport, secretion
where is simple columnar epithelium found? function?
digestive tract, lining stomach or intestines. secretion, absorption.
what is PCCE? where is it found? function?
Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium. respiratory system, fallopian tube. “sweeping” or movement of particles, secretion of mucus.
what do goblet cells make?
mucus
where’s stratified squamous epithelium (non-keratinized) found? function?
vaginal canal, esophagus. wet protection.
where is keratinized stratified squamous epithelium found? function?
epidermis. dry protection.
where is stratified cuboidal epithelium found? function?
large ducts of glands (sweat, salivary). protection, support, facilitate secretion
where is transitional epithelium found? function?
lining of the urinary bladder. allow expansions and contractions as organ is filled/emptied.
what are the parts of areolar tissue?
fibroblasts, collagen fibers, elastic fibers, ground substance, ECM
areolar tissue: what kind of tissue? where is it found? function?
loose. hypodermis, around organs. provide support, hold tissue and organs in place
parts of adipose tissue?
adipocytes, lipid droplet, nucleus (of cell), cytoplasm at edge of adipocytes.
where is adipose tissue found? function?
hypodermis. store fat for energy, homeostasis, support
parts of dense regular and irregular CT?
fibroblasts, collagen fibers
location and function of dense regular CT?
tendons and ligaments. its CT proper—connect structures (bone and muscle). transferring force/strength
dense irregular CT: location? function?
dermis. CT proper—connect structures, tensile strength (stretch)
Hyaline cartilage: parts? location? function?
chondrocytes, lacuna, collagen fibers. ribs, trachea. support.
Elastic cartilage: parts, location, function?
chondrocytes, lacuna, elastic fibers, ECM. ear, epiglottis. support
compact bone: parts, location, function.
central canal, lamella, osteocytes, canaliculi (whole thing osteon). bone. support, hold calcium/phosphorous, facilitate movement.
Blood (Fluid CT): Parts, location, function?
RBC (erythrocyte), WBC (leukocyte), platelets (thrombocytes), plasma.
Gas exchange, immunity, blood clotting.
Inside organs of circulatory system.
