Histology Flashcards
What are the layers of oral mucosa?
Stratum corneum - keratinised layer
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinosum - prickle cell layer
Basal layer
Lamina propria
Submucosa
What are the three types of oral mucosa?
Lining
Masticatory
Gustatory
Typically what are the characteristics of masticatory mucosa?
mucosa that is subjected to friction or compression
Thick and tightly bound lamina propria so tissue is taught
Parakeratinised
Typically what are the characteristics of lining mucosa?
Much more loosely attached to periosteum with flexible submucosa and lamina propria
Allows tissue to move more freely and be manipulated
Non keratinised
Faster cell turnover
Typically what are the characteristics of gustatory mucosa?
Fungiform papilla
Filliform papilla
Vallate papilla in V shape at posterior border of tongue, also has a valley histologically around the papilla
Foliate papilla on the edge of the tongue
