Histology Flashcards
What are the functions of the respiratory system?
- Move air in and out of the lungs
- Deliver oxygen
- Remove carbon dioxide
How is air conditioned in the respiratory system?
It is humidified, warmed and filtered
Where is air conditioned in the respiratory system?
The conduction portion
What is included in the conducting portion of the respiratory system?
The nasal cavities, nasopharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and terminal bronchioles
What is included in the respiratory portion of the respiratory system?
The respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs and alveoli
What is the function of the respiratory portion of the respiratory system?
Passive gas exchange between the atmosphere and the lungs
What are the functional divisions of the respiratory system?
The conducting portion and the respiratory portion
What are the 4 main layers of the respiratory system?
- The respiratory mucosa
- The submucosa
- The cartilage and/or muscle layer
- The adventitia
What epithelium is characteristic of the nasal mucosa?
Pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium
What are the predominant cell types in the respiratory epithelium?
- Ciliated columnar cells
- Goblet cells
- Basal cells
What is the function of clara cells
They produce surfactant
What is the function of surfactant?
It maintains the inflation of the alveoli
