histology Flashcards

1
Q

epithelium of gall bladder

A

simple columnar

gall bladder function: concentrate bile produced by liver => absorptive function
therefore, more likely to be simple epithelia than stratified!

Q

4 types of lung cancer + 1

A

small cell carcinoma
*rapidly spread and metastasize, associated with SMOKING, ADH/ACTH-secreting tumours

squamous cell
*slow growing, late metastasize, large pink tumour cells, associated with hypercalcaemia => therefore PTH secretion

adenocarcinoma
*GLANDULAR structure, usually in NON-smokers

large cell
*undifferentiated and literally large

mesothelioma
*malignancy from pleural surface, associated with asbestos, no metastasis

Q

Barrett’s esophagus is what

A

metaplasia!!

non-keratinised stratified epithelial cells replaced by simple columnar epithelial cells when exposed to stomach acid (E.G. during stomach acid reflux)

note: metaplasia is reversible!!

Q

aorta

A

elastic artery => THICK layer of elastic fibers. look squiggly ww

  • larger, more elastic
  • smaller, more muscular

Q

tunica intima vs tunica media vs tunica adventitia

A

intima: thinnest layer, contains ENDOTHELIAL cells
media: THICKEST layers, composed of multiple concentric layers of smooth muscles fibres (red)
adventitia: connective tissue
