Histo 3: Heart Flashcards
3 Layers of the Heart
- Endocardium
- Myocardium
- Epicardium
Easiest place to see endocardium - atrium or ventricle?
atrium (much thicker)
Subendocardium
part of the endocardium where yo uwill find vessels and nerves
type of connective tissue in endothelium
dense CT
Is this atrium or ventricle?
atrium
Where will you find Purkinje fibers?
ventricle endothelium
Number and placement of nuclei in myocardial cells?
1-2 nuclei, center of cell
What unique feature will you see in a longitudinal section of cardiac muscle?
intercalated discs
How much more muscle mass does the left ventricle have compared to the right ventricle?
three times the amount
What is outlined in orange?
Interventricular septum
Does the cardiac skeleton vary amonng species?
yes - could be bone, cartilage, or CT
os cordis
when the trigone of the cardiac skeleton becomes ossified (ex: cattle)
What kinds of things will you see in the epicardium histologically?
adipose tissue, larger vessels and nerves, layer of mesothelium
5 layers of the heart
- Epicardium
- Pericardial space
- Parietal serous pericardium
- Fibrous pericardium
- Mediastinal pericardial pleura
2 Types of Heart Valves
- AV (2-3 leaves/cusps)
- Semilunar (3 cusps)
