- alleviate heartburn, prevent complications in PUD, prevent ulcers, promote healing of gastroesophageal reflux disease

- hypersensitivity
- impaired renal or hepatic function

Cimetidine (Nursing Considerations)
A
- food reduces the rate of absorption
- cimetidine and antacids should be taken 1 hour apart
- reduce dosage in clients w/ renal impairment
- penetrates the BBB - CNS SE (mental confusion, agitation)

Ranitidine, Famotidine and Nizatidine (nursing considerations)
A
- not affected by food
- side effects uncommon in Ranitidine
- Ranitidine does not penetrate the BBB
