hist chapt 4 Flashcards
what was the main aim of the league of nations?
to resolve international disputes without going to war
in 1919 how many countries did the LON order to disarm?
44 member countries
what did collective security mean in the LON?
that all the members would protect one another if attacked
why was the LON structurally weak? (give 2 reasons)
- permanent members of council could veto decisions (Britain + France)
- without the USA, they had a legitimacy and enforcement issue as USA was a world power with one of the biggest armies.
why was the prime minister of Britain not convinced about being in the LON?
David Lloyd George wanted a simpler organization that met only during emergencies.
why was the prime minister of France not convinced in joining the LON?
George Clemenceau was skeptical about the league and wanted his country to be free and act independently
why did the US refuse to join the LON?
after WW1, the US congress decided that they did not want to lose their own people over other people’s soil and created a policy of not getting involved in foreign affairs
what were the impacts of not having the US in the LON? (2 examples)
- economic sanctions would be difficult to enforce as the US could still supply weapons and goods to aggressor countries
- the absence of the US military made it difficult to take strong action against aggressive countries (also cus Britain and France who were key members of the LON were weakened by WW1)
what took place in the Kellog-Briand Pact 1928?
an agreement between65 nations not to use force to settle disputes
- however, there was no clear way on how to enforce the pact
what were the effects of the Kellog-Briand Pact?
it under minded the LONs authority as the guarantor of peace in the world as the pact was negotiated outside of the LON
what was the aim of the World Disarmament conference in 1932-1934?
to deal issues of limiting offensive weapons and Germany
why did the World Disarmament Conference not come to any agreement?
- France, Poland, and Czechoslovakia objected due to fears of potential German invasion
- others refused to disarm to the same extent as Germany under the TOV
- Germany withdrew from the LON.
- caused nations to put their interests ahead of world disarmament and collective security bc they felt that with Germany withdrawing anyone could do whatever they want
what happened in the Abyssinian Crisis 1935?
Italy launched an invasion of Abyssinia and Abyssinia appeared to the LON for help.
what were the impacts of the Abyssinian Crisis?
- news of the Hoare-Laval Pact came out, damaged the reputation of the LON cus they weren’t able to act on the situation like they were supposed to (to resolve international disputes without going into war)
- the LON instead had a secret plan to offer Benito Mussolini most of Abyssinian in return for a truce in the Italy Ethiopian War
- B+F also didn’t do anyt cus they alr had a good rls with Italy and didnt want to do anyt to worsen the rls
- all this led to Hitler concluding that the LON would not be able to hinder Germanys plan of expansion
what does the Nazi Party believing in an aggressive form of nationalism mean?
- putting Germany and its people before anyone or anything else
