What were the causes of Age Of Exploration?

A

The causes were:
Wealth-most voyages were funded by governments of Spain or Portugal. Rulers hoped to add wealth from these explorations.
Religion-explorers wanted to convert people from new lands to Christianity.
New trade routes-More trade routes were created throughout Asia and Africa such as spice islands.

What new technology was created from Renaissance?

A

New types of ships like Caravels which meant sailing faster and easier. New technology in navigation such as compass, log and line for speed, rudder for steering, sand glass for time, quadrant for latitude.

A

1394-1460. Third son of king of Portugal. Went along coast of Africa. Set up a navigation school at Sagres.

Who was Bartholomew Diaz?

A

Born in 1450 near Lisbon in noble family. First European sailor to sail around southern Africa successfully. 1487 Diaz left Lisbon. Sailed down the coast of Africa. Caught in storm and blow the southwards for 2 weeks. He sailed eastwards after the storm. It wasn’t there so he turned northwards until he reached Africa. Cape if storms later renamed cape of good hope.

Who was de Gama?

A

Born in 1469 in Sines. Very religious and militaristic. 10 years after Diaz expedition, Da Gama was chosen to lead another journey. 8 July 1497 170 men and Da Gama left port Lisbon. Lost sight of land for 96 days. He rounded the cape of good hope. He stayed close to land and sailed northwards. Da Gama returned to Portugal after 2 years and was given lands and a title. He made 3 voyages, Second voyage in 1502 and third in 1524
