Dakuten (dak-ten or ten-ten) is a symbol looks like “ (double quotation mark).
It turns the consonant into a “voiced” or “vibrating” sound, which
just means your vocal cords vibrate when the sound is made.

  1. K -> G: (Kata)Kana -> (Hira)Gana
  2. S -> Z: Smooth -> Zigzag
    BUT shi ~ ji: Shivers -> Jitters
  3. T -> D: Ta-Da!
    chi -> dzi: Chin -> Ding
    tsu -> du: Tsunami -> Dust
  4. H -> B: Ha-Ha-Ha at the Bar

Another variety called Han-dakuten (han-dak-ten), it is indicated by a circular
symbol that looks like a grad symbol in science (small circle in the upper right corner). It turns the consonant into a softer sound.

It can only mark H-sounds:
H -> P: Ha-Ha-Ha so hard that you get Punched
