Hip + Thigh Flashcards
1
Q
name muscles of the superficial gluteal region, innervation and function
A
- gluteus maximus
- innerv: IGN
- fxn: laterally rotates thigh and abducts thigh
- gluteus minimus
- innerv: SGN
- fxn: medially rotate and abduct thigh
- gluteus medius
- innerv: SGN
- fxn: medially rotate and abduct thigh
- tensor fasciae lata
- innver: SGN
- fxn: stabilize knee in extension
2
Q
name muscles of deep gluteal region, innerv and fxn
A
- piriformis
- innerv: S1, S2
- fxn: lateral rotator of thigh and abducts thigh
- superior gemellus
- innerv: nerve to obturator internus
- fxn: lateral rotator of thigh and abducts thigh
- obturator internus
- innerv: nerve to obturator internus
- fxn: lateral rotator of thigh and abducts thigh
- inf. gemellus
- innerv: nerve to quadrator femoris
- fxn: lateral rotator of thigh and abducts thigh
- quadrator femoris
- innerv: nerve to quadrator femoris
- fxn: lateral rotator of thigh
3
Q
describe Trendelenburg sign
A
- normally, gluteus minimus and gluteus medius contract when contralateral foot leaves ground
- when injury to SGN occurs, hip drops on uninjured side since the injured side can’t contract
4
Q
name 3 main ligaments of the joint capsule
A
- ilio-femoral ligament (anterior and superior)
- AIIS to intertrochontric line
- prevents hyper-extension
- pubo-femoral ligament (anterior and inferior)
- pubic bone to femur
- prevents hyper-abduction
- ischio-femoral ligament (posterior)
- ischium to femur
5
Q
describe the cruciate anastomosis
A
- medial circumflex femoral artery
- lateral circumflex femoral artery
- 1st perforating branch of the deep femoral artery
- branch of inferior gluteal artery
6
Q
describe the posterior compartment of the thigh
A
all innervated by tibial branch of sciatic nerve
- semitendinosus
- semimembranosus
- fxn: flexes the leg at knee, extends the thigh at the hip
- biceps femoris
- fxn: flexes leg at knee, extends thigh at hip
