Hip rehabilitation Flashcards
What are some potential bone injuries?
- Degenerative osteochondritis
- Degenerative osteoarthritis
- Anteromedial hip impingement syndrome
What is degenerative osteochondritis?
Inflammation of the cartilage/articular surfaces; precursor to osteoarthritis
What is degenerative osteoarthritis?
Bone comes in to replaces damaged bone but not laid down in an effective way
What is anteromedial hip impingement syndrome also known as?
Femoral acetabular impingement
What are some things that may cause anteromedial hip impingement syndrome?
- Tight gluteus medius
- Weak external rotators
- Pronated feet
- Cam shaped femoral head
What are some potential muscle injuries?
- Adductor strains
- Abductor strains
- Gluteal strains
- Hip flexor strains
- Hamstring strains
What are some potential mural injuries?
- Lumbosacral referral
- Sciatica
- Piriformis syndrome
What are some potential accessory tissue injuries?
- Trochanteric bursitis
- Iliopsoas bursitis
- Ischial bursitis
What is a way to stretch the gluteus maximus for flexibility?
- Lay supine
- Pull knee to the shoulder of the same side
- Pull ankle towards the other shoulder to rotate hip
What is a way to stretch the gluteus medius for flexibility?
- Lay supine
- Therapist crosses patients legs
- Apply upper long axis load to stabilize the pelvis
- Adduct the top leg to stretch
What is a way to stretch the piriformis for flexibility?
- Lay supine
- Flex hip to 90 degrees
- Cross-flex te hip
- Therapist assist will prevent the pelvis from rolling forward
What is a way to stretch the adductors for flexibility?
- Sit up right
- Bent knees for short adductors
- Straight legs for long adductors
What is a way to stretch the hip flexors for flexibility?
- Lunge stretch
- Modified thomas stretch
What is a way to stretch the iliotibial band for flexibility?
- Ober’s stretch
What is a way to stretch the hamstrings for flexibility?
- Straight leg for the lower hamstrings
- Bent knee for the upper hamstrings
