Hip Q1 Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
Function: extends, abducts, and externally rotates hips; lateral stabilizer of hip joint and knee joint
Innervation: Inferior gluteal nerve (L5, S1, S2)
Origin: Fascia of gluteus medius and erector spinae, dorsal surface of sacrum, coccyx, and sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion: iliotibial tract and gluteal tuberosity of the femur
Gluteus Medius
Function: Abducts hip; stabilizes pelvis over stance; anterior fibers: internal rotation of the hip; posterior fibers: external rotation of the hip
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Origin: External surface of ilium
Insertion: greater trochanter of the femur
Gluteus Minimus
Function: Abducts and medially rotates hip; stabilizes pelvis over stance
Innervation: Superior gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Origin: External surface of ilium
Insertion: greater trochanter of the femur
Tensor Facia Latae
Function: Hip flexion, abduction, and internal rotation; stabilizes the knee in extension
Innervation: Superior Gluteal nerve (L4, L5, S1)
Origin: Crest of ilium
Insertion: Iliotibial tract of fascia lata
Piriformis
Function: Hip external rotation with the extended femur; Hip abduction with flexed femur
Innervation: Branches from S1 and S2
Origin: Anterior surface of sacrum
Insertion: of greater trochanter of femur
Obturator Internus
Function: Hip external rotation with the extended femur; Hip abduction with flexed femur
Innervation: Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
Origin: Obturator membrane
Insertion: greater trochanter of femur
Obturator Externus
Function: Hip external rotation with the extended femur; hip abduction with flexed femur
Innervation: Obturator nerve
Origin: Obturator membrane
Insertion: Trochanteric fossa of the femur
Superior Gemilli
Function: Hip external rotation with the extended femur; Hip abduction with flexed femur
Innervation: Nerve to obturator internus (L5, S1)
Origin: External surface of ischial spine
Insertion: greater trochanter of femur
Inferior Gamelli
Function: Hip external rotation with extended femur; hip abduction with flexed femur
Innervation: Nerve to quadratus femoris
Origin: ischial tuberosity
Insertion: greater trochanter of femur
Quadrus Femoris
Function: Hip external rotation
Innervation: Nerve to quadratus femoris (L5, S1)
Origin: Lateral aspect of the ischium
Insertion: Intertrochanter crest of the femur
