Hip Muscles Flashcards
Pectineus
Origin- Superior ramus of pubis
Insertion- Pectineal line of femur to lesser trochanter
Innervation- Femoral Nerve L2
Action- Adducts/ slightly flexes hip joint
Iliopsoas
Origin- Sides of T12-L5 vertebrae/ all transverse processes of all lumbar vertebrae
Insertion- Lesser trochanter of femur
Innervation- Anterior rami of Lumbar nerves L1-L3
Action- Act conjointly in flexion and lateral rotation of hip joint and stabilizing this joint when standing
Sartorius
Origin- Iliac spine/Superior part of notch inferior to it
Insertion- Superior part of medial surface of tibia
Innervation- Femoral nerve L2, L3
Action - flexes, abducts and laterally rotates hip; flexes knee
Rectus femoris
Origin- Anterior inferior iliac spine and ilium superior to acetabulum
Insertion- common tendinous and independent attachments to base of patella; medial/lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses
Innervation- Femoral nerve L3,L4
Action- Extends knee joint; rectus Femoris also steadies hip joint and iliopsoas flexes hip joint
Vastus Lateralis
Origin- Greater trochanter/ lateral lip of linea aspera of femur
Insertion- Common tendinous and independent attachments to base of patella ; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeuroses
Innervation- Femoral nerve L3, L4
Action- extends knee joint; rectus femoris steadies hip joint and iliopsoas flexes hip joint
Vastus Medialis
Origin- Intertrochanteric line and medial lip of linea aspera of femur
Insertion- via common tendinous and independent attachments to base of the patella; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeurosis
Innervation- Femoral nerve L2-L4
Action- Extends knee joint; rectus femoris also steadies hip joint and helps iliopsoas flex hip joint
Vastus Intermedius
Origin- Anterior and lateral surfaces of shaft of femur
Insertion- Via common tendinous and independent attachments to base of patella; medial and lateral vasti also attach to tibia and patella via aponeurosis
Innervation- Femoral nerve L2-L4
Action- Extends knee joint; rectus femoris also steadies hip joint and helps iliopsoas flex hip joint
Adductor longus
Origin- Body of pubis inferior to pubic crest
Insertion- middles third of linea aspera of femur
Innervation- Obturator nerve and branch of anterior division L2-L4
Action- Adducts hip joint
Adductor Brevis
Origin- Body and inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion- pectineal line and proximal part of linea aspera of femur
Innervation- obturator nerve and branch of anterior division L2-L4
Action- Adducts hip joint and to some extend/flex
Gracilis
Origin- Body of inferior ramus of pubis
Insertion- Superior part of medial surface of tibia
Innervation- Obturator nerve L2, L3
Action Adducts hip joint; flexes knee joint, medially rotating when flexed
Adductor Magnus
Origin-
Adductor Part: inferior ramus of pubis and ramus of ischium
Hamstring Part: Ischial tuberosity
Insertion-
Adductor part: Gluteal tuberosity, linea aspera and medial supracondylar line
Hamstring part: Adductor tubercle of the femur
Innervation-
Adductor Part: Obturator nerve L2-L4 and branches of posterior division
Hamstring part: Tibial part of sciatic nerve L4
Action - Adducts hip Joint
Adductor part: flexes hip joint
Hamstring part: extend hip joint
Obturator Externus
Origin- Margins of obturator foramen and obturator membrane
Insertion- Trochanter fossa of femur
Innervation- Obturator nerve L3, L4
Action Laterally rotates hip joint; Stabilizes hip joint
Gluteus Maximus
Origin- Ilium; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion- Most fibers end in the iliotibial tract which inserts into lateral condyle of tibia; some fibers insert on gluteal tuberosity
Innervation- Inferior gluteal nerve L5-S2
Action- Extends hip joint and assists in lateral rotation; flexes hip joint and assists in rising from sitting position
Gluteus Medius
Origin- External surfaces of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Insertion- Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
Innervation- superior gluteal nerve L5, S1
Action- abducts and medially rotates hip joint
Gluteus Medius
Origin- External surfaces of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines
Insertion- Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur
Innervation- superior gluteal nerve L5, S1
Action- abducts and medially rotates hip joint
