Hip Ligament Flashcards
What is the iliofemoral ligament?
A very strong triangular ligament of considerable thickness situated anterior to the joint
Where does the apex of the iliofemoral ligament attach?
To the lower part of the anterior inferior iliac spine and adjacent part of the acetabular rim
Where does the base of the iliofemoral ligament attach?
To the intertrochanteric line
Why is the iliofemoral ligament often referred to as Y-shaped?
Because the central part is thinner, resembling a Y with the stem as the apex and the two limbs as the base
What are the strongest parts of the iliofemoral ligament?
The outer bands attaching to the upper and lower parts of the intertrochanteric line
What is the characteristic of the central area of the iliofemoral ligament?
It is thinner and weaker
What does the pubofemoral ligament strengthen?
The inferior and anterior aspects of the joint capsule
From where to where does the pubofemoral ligament run?
From the iliopubic eminence and superior pubic ramus to the lower part of the intertrochanteric line
With which ligament does the pubofemoral ligament blend?
The inferior band of the iliofemoral ligament
Where is the joint capsule at its thinnest?
Between the iliofemoral and pubofemoral ligaments
What tendon crosses the joint capsule between the iliofemoral and pubofemoral ligaments?
The tendon of iliopsoas
What is the ischiofemoral ligament?
A ligament that spirals laterally and upwards around the capsule, less well-defined than the iliofemoral or pubofemoral ligaments.
Where does the ischiofemoral ligament arise from?
From the body of the ischium behind and below the acetabulum.
To what part of the femur does the ischiofemoral ligament attach?
To the superior part of the neck and root of the greater trochanter.
True or False: The ischiofemoral ligament is more well-defined than the iliofemoral ligament.
False.
Fill in the blank: The ischiofemoral ligament attaches to the _______ part of the neck and root of the greater trochanter.
superior
What is the role of the three capsular ligaments in the hip?
They limit and control various movements of the hip
