Hip dislocation Flashcards
What is a hip dislocation?
A traumatic hip injury where the femoral head is dislocated out of the acetabular socket
What is the normal mechanism of a hip disloation?
A young patient who has experienced high energy trauma - such as a car crash (knees up on dashboard)
Why is hip dislocation uncommon?
As it is a stable joint due to
- labrum
- capsule
- ligaments - e.g. ligamentum teres
How is hip dislocation treated?
Non operative - closed reduction within 12 hours
Surgery - open reduction - if irreducible, delayed presentation or alongside fractures
What are some complications of hip dislocation?
Post traumatic arthritis
Femoral head necrosis
Sciatic nerve injury
Recurrent dislocations
Which type of hip dislocation is more common?
Posterior is more common than anterior and central
How does a posterior hip dislocation present?
Pain
Inability to weight bear
In a position of flexion, internal rotation and adduction

How does a anterior hip dislocation present?
Pain
Inability to weight bear
In a position of extension and external rotation. May be abducted.
Describe a central hip dislocation
Where the head of the femur is driven into the pelvis, through the acetabulum.
It is always a fracture dislocation.
