Assessment Skills: Hip
Surface Anatomy (Posterior - Glute)
- Greater Trochanter = Review from lumbar lecture; have patient ER/IR and find the bony prominence
- Gluteus Minimus = Side lying with hip slightly flexed, have patient resist abduction. Palpate between iliac crest and greater trochanter
- Gluteus Meduis = Side lying with hip extended, have patient resist abduction. Palpate between iliac crest and greater trochanter
- Gluteus Maximus = Most easily palpated inferior to PSIS
Assessment Skills: Hip
Hip Surface Anatomy (Anterior - Thigh)
- Adductors = From pubis down medial aspect of thigh; use resistance to help with location; inserts at linea aspera and down to adductor tubercle
- Quadriceps = Anterior thigh; rectus femoris, vastus lateralis; vastus medialis
- Sartorius = From ASIS to medial tibia (medial to tibial tuberosity)
- Tensor Fascia Latae to Iliotobial Band = Iliac crest/ASIS to ITB on lateral thigh; Side lying with hip flexed and IR 30o, resist hip abduction
