Hip Arthrology Flashcards
Describe the fibrous capsule of hip joint.
Strong, fibrous
Attaches proximally to acetabulum and transverse acetabular ligament and distally to neck of femur anteriorly at greater trochanter
Identify areas where the capsule is thickest.
Anteriorly and superiorly
What’s the function of the deepest longitudinal fibres?
They convey blood vessels to the head and neck of the femur
Describe attachments of the ischiofemoral ligament.
Origin: body of ischium posterior and inferior to acetabulum
Insertion: superior part of neck of femur and root of greater trochanter
Describe the attachments of the iliofemoral ligament
Origin: (AIIS) anterior inferior iliac spine
Insertion: along the intertrochanteric line of femur
Describe the attachments of the pubofemoral ligament
Origin: Iliopubic eminence and superior part of ramus
Insertion: inferior part of intertrochanteric line
What three movements do the iliofemoral and pubofemoral ligaments both limit?
Extension
Lateral rotation
Abduction
Name the four intracapsular structures in the hip joint
Transverse acetabular ligament
Acetabular labrum
Ligamentum teres
Acetabular fat pad
Describe the ligamentum teres
Weak
Flattened band of connective tissue
Between the acetabular notch, the transverse ligament and the fovea capitis
Ligamentum teres’ function?
Carries an artery in childhood to supply the femoral head
Structure of acetabulum
Formed by contributions from all three parts of the innominate bone
Almost a hemispherical cavity in the innominate
Directed laterally, inferiorly and anteriorly
Cup shaped cavity on the lateral side of innominate bone
Attachments of piriformis muscle
Origin: anterior part of sacrum, gluteal surface of ilium, sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion: upper and medial part of greater trochanter
Movements produced by piriformis
Lateral rotation of the hip
Abduction of hip in sitting
Nerve supply to piriformis
Anterior rami sacral plexus L5,S1,2
What muscle lies immediately above piriformis?
Gluteus medius
