hip and thigh - goniometry Flashcards
hip flexion
▪ Testing position: positions patient supine or sidelying, with the knee flexed
▪ Stabilization: pelvis
▪ Axis: greater trochanter of the femur
▪ Stationary arm: lateral midline of the trunk
▪ Moving arm: lateral midline of the femur (lateral epicondyle of femur)
hip extension
▪ Testing position: positions patient prone, with the knee fully extended
▪ Stabilization: pelvis
▪ Axis: greater trochanter of the femur
▪ Stationary arm: lateral midline of the trunk
▪ Moving arm: lateral midline of the femur (lateral epicondyle of femur)
hip abduction
▪ Testing position: positions patient supine, with the knee fully extended
▪ Stabilization: pelvis and lateral aspect of knee
▪ Axis: anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
▪ Stationary arm: opposite anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
▪ Moving arm: anterior midline of the femur (center of patella)
hip adduction
▪ Testing position: positions patient supine, with the knee fully extended, and the opposite hip fully abducted
▪ Stabilization: pelvis
▪ Axis: anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
▪ Stationary arm: opposite anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
▪ Moving arm: anterior midline of the femur (center of patella)
hip internal (medial) rotation
▪ Testing position: positions patient sitting, with the hip flexed 90 degrees, knee flexed 90 degrees, and a towel under the
distal femur
▪ Stabilization: distal femur
▪ Axis: center of patella
▪ Stationary arm: perpendicular to the floor
▪ Moving arm: anterior midline of the lower leg (midpoint of the malleoli)
hip external (lateral) rotation
▪ Testing position: positions patient sitting, with the hip flexed 90 degrees, knee flexed 90 degrees, and a towel under the
distal femur
▪ Axis: center of patella
▪ Stationary arm: perpendicular to the floor
▪ Moving arm: anterior midline of the lower leg (midpoint of the malleoli)
