hip Flashcards
snapping hip syndrome
=popping/ clicking sound in hip
caused by tight muscle/ tendon movng over a bone
external-IT band passing greater trochanter
anterior- rectus femoris tendon across femur
posterior- hamstring at ischial tuberosity
15-40 YOA
risks- athletes doing repetitive sports, young adults with recent groth spurt, females
symptoms- snapping in front, back, side of leg when moving hip, swelling in hip, weakness in leg, hard time moving hip
prognosis- treatment can alleviate symptoms
iliopectineal bursitis
inflammation of bursa caused by trauma, OA and RA
40-60YOA
risks- sedentary lifestyle, sitting too long on a hard surface, male
symptoms- pelvic/ inguinal mass, groin/ redicular pain, referred pain alog anterior thigh due to irritation of femoral nerve, swelling of lower extremity
prognosis- NSAIDs, stretching
ischial (trochanteric) bursitis
=bursitis of buttock region
caused by chronic and continuous irritation of bursa, direct trauma to area, injury to hamstring/ tendon through activities
40-60 YOA
risks- sedentary lifestyle, prolonged sitting on a hard surface, male
symptoms- tenderness in upper thigh/ lower buttocks, swelling in lower buttock, pain when stretching hip or buttock, pain worsening when sitting, inability to extend hip, radiating pain from buttock down leg
prognosis- recovery can take several weeks
meralgia parasthetica
=compression of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve
caused by local trauma, disease, fluid accumulation in abdomen increasing abdominal pressure, scar tissue near iguinal lig due to injury or surgery
30-60 YOA
risks- tight clothing, obesity, pregnancy
symptoms- tingling, numbness and burning in outer thigh, decreased sensation, increased sensitivity and pain to a light touch
prognosis- will improve with treatment and may spontaneously resolve. may cause permanant nerve damage
acquired dislocaction of hip
=anterior or posterior dislocation of femoral head
can be congenital (result from position of poetus pushed against abdominal wall) or acquired (native dislocations or after hip replacements)
any age
risks- neurological disorder, previous surgery, arthritis
symptoms- severe pain, inability to move affected leg
prognosis- varies with type of dislocation. will usually have good results. 2-3 months to fully recover
