- L. 1/3 of transverse colon
- descending colon
- sigmoid colon
- rectum & upper part of anal canal
- epithelium of urinary bladder & most of urethra
How can the large intestine be distinguished from the small
Omental appendices: small, fatty, peritoneal like projections
Hausta or sacculations: constrictions and bulges
- teniae coli: thickened bands of smooth muscle
What is the appendix
Blind intestinal diverticulum with masses of lymphatic tissue
Why is the lymphatic tissue in the appendix important
Important for GI tract as helps fight infection (this is why you often get infection here - appendicitis)
What is the arterial blood supply of the hindgut (what’s its origin)
Inferior mesenteric artery
Origin: anterior branch of abdominal aorta (L3)
What are the branches of the inferior mesenteric artery (3)
- L. Colic
- sigmoid
- superior rectal (terminal branch of mesenteric artery)
