How to decide radical vs partial resection?
A
Surgical management is the only chance of cure for patients with renal cell carcinoma. The main factor which determines the feasibility and extent of a surgical procedure in these patients is the stage of the disease. If the process extends through the renal capsule but not beyond Gerota’s fascia, (stage II) radical nephrectomy is the best treatment option. Radical nephrectomy can also be employed in patients with invasion of major veins, abdominal lymph nodes and adrenal glands, (stage III) although it is technically more difficult. If renal mass is still within renal capsule (stage I)- partial nephrectomy
